Smiling Girl

This is the painting of a girl shopping on Powell and Market here in San Francisco. She was shy about getting her portrait being painted,  yet secretly happy that someone thought her worthy of painting. My father once said, ” You spend your first 30 years hoping no one will notice you, the next 30 trying to get everyone to notice you, and the last 30 years realizing no one cared in the first place.” I think this girl is in that stage between not wanting attention, and secretly hoping to get it.
