Local Quitman shop owners, Niki and Jon Bell of Bell’s Ice Cream Café were surprised with a rare treat last Friday. A man who wants to be known as “Peace Artist” spent the afternoon in the quaint shop eating ice cream, avoiding the heat of the day, and creating a “peace” of art that is now displayed on the ice cream shop’s wall.

Peace Artist has been making his way around the country since July 2011 on a 8,000 to 10,000 mile journey to promote love, art, and peace. He is trying to promote peace between nations, among people, and most of all, inner peace. He started in Seattle, Washington and has been touching thousands of people’s lives along the perimeter of the continental United States.

Armed only with bare necessities, plus a phone, computer, and art supplies; the Peace Artist runs until he finds or is given shelter. He doesn’t eat until he is offered something or finds wild flowers and berries along the path, and never asks anyone for anything. He does not accept any money, only art supplies and he is giving his artwork as a “peace offering” for those willing to accept it.

His only hope is that “others will be encouraged and inspired by his example, and they will do what they can for peace.”

He made his way through Wood County making a stop in Alba before visiting Quitman. As of Monday, he was in Longview continuing his pilgrimage for “Love, Art and of course Peace”.

Citizens can follow his journey on his website at or by searching “Peace Artist” on Facebook.

(Very kind of Jon and Niki, as well as Lauren)
